Life can be exciting, busy and fun, but it can also be very challenging at times. Sometimes all we need is to be heard, but often friends or family want to fix us, advise us and make things better. This is one of the reasons why so many of us suffer in silence, for fear of burdening people with our problems, or fear of being judged or rejected. Counselling offers an opportunity to explore your issues, in a safe, confidential space.
Humanistic counselling focuses on the client’s self-development and personal growth and personal choices. The humanistic approach provides the client with a better understanding of who they are, what they feel and helps the client improve their self-awareness and self-realisation. This involves a close counselling relationship between the counsellor/therapist and the client. Transactional analysis helps to provide a connection between a client’s past and how this may influence decisions and choices that you make today. It is especially helpful when exploring problems and issues in relationships.
Counselling can help with issues such as anxiety, depression, panic-attacks, anger issues, abuse, relationship problems, bereavement & loss, redundancy, sexuality issues, addiction, low self-esteem and childhood-related problems.
I am a qualified Humanistic Counsellor based on Transactional Analysis.
I decided to train as a counsellor after my own personal experience with counselling, during a very difficult time in my life. I found that it really helped to talk to someone who I wasn’t emotionally attached to, who was very happy to listen to my problems and happy for me to express my emotions freely. The experience was empowering, and enabled me to discover my inner resilience.
I work in a very open and transparent way with my clients. I offer a non-judgemental, supportive and empathic service, in a safe, peaceful and confidential space.
I am in private practice, and I work out of The Wellbeing Centre in Newbury, Berkshire.
In our initial session, I will carry out an assessment, which will help me to understand what it is you are struggling with currently, and to explore what you’d like to gain from counselling. It is a good opportunity for us to see if we feel we could work well together.
This is a short breathing exercise that I have recorded, to help you feel more relaxed, to relieve stress, to help you to feel more grounded/less anxious and to acknowledge the thoughts and feelings that you have without becoming overwhelmed by them. Some of my clients use this exercise outside of our sessions, as it encourages them to take a bit of time out of their busy lives just for them each day.
Face to Face counselling - £50 per 50 minute session. Payable in cash at the end of each session.
Telephone counselling - £40 per 50 minute session. Payable by bank transfer in advance.

I started my work as a humanistic counsellor in a voluntary capacity, working for two charity organisations. At one charity I worked with clients with mental health issues, some of which included depression, anxiety, low self-esteem, childhood abuse, loss and bereavement, anger issues, and relationship problems. At the other organisation I worked with clients with issues around drug and alcohol misuse. I am now in private practice, and I help clients work through a variety of issues including:-
When I first contacted Nicola I had no idea why I was struggling with depression and couldn't see a way out of the hole I was stuck in. I was swamped by emotions and negative thoughts that both frightened me and made it impossible to face the world.
Nicola offered the kind, supportive and insightful guidance I needed. Nicola guided me through my thoughts and relationships, and helped me to find ways in which I could both control and regulate my emotional responses.
Nicola has helped me find my calm and nurturing adult voice, and through her support I have been able to face the world again. I have changed my life in so many ways, and I have taken control of my emotional state. I feel empowered and I simply couldn't have done it without Nicola's patient and intelligent counselling.
I know that Nicola is there for me if I ever need to seek support again, and I am feeling stronger every day "S.H." February 2015
Nicola has been my counsellor on and off for nearly a year now. She is the most caring, non-judgemental and professional person I have had the pleasure of meeting.
It is evident she is passionate about her work and ensures you feel totally comfortable during sessions. Nicola has helped me to reflect on difficult situations in my life and has built on my strengths to enable me to make positive steps to move forward - it's been a difficult but amazing journey filled with both tears and laughter.
I have nothing but praise for Nicola and would thoroughly recommend her services. I would not be where I am now without her help. "S.C." May 2015
Thank you very much for your support and help over the past months, you have given me the support to make life a positive and happy rewarding time, day in and day out. Thank you. "T.G." June 2015
When I contacted Nicola I had been turned away by other counsellors, as I had some very unpleasant issues to address and work through. I was deeply worried that I wouldn’t be able to find anyone who would work with me, but Nicola took me on and never once judged me for my previous behaviour and actions. Nicola has helped me transform my life from a place of stark darkness and complex issues to one where I have now found true self-awareness, mindfulness and a genuine understanding of what I want and need. Nicola is not only professional to the core and very easy to talk to, but also extremely warm and personable. I consider myself extraordinarily lucky to have found Nicola purely by chance at a time when I was at my lowest ebb, as I could not have wished to have found a better counsellor and someone who exudes a genuine sense of caring. I cannot recommend Nicola highly enough, she has been simply amazing, and for her help and support I will forever be grateful. "Anon", October 2015
I first contacted Nicola when I saw a testimonial from one of her clients on Facebook. I'd been toying with the idea of seeing a counsellor for a while, as I knew I had some major issues to work through which were seriously affecting my ability to enjoy my life on a day-to-day basis. After reading about her client's experience, it really felt like Nicola was going to be the right person to help me.
Over the past five months, Nicola has provided such a safe and supportive environment for me to explore these issues, and our sessions have had a profound effect on me.
Nicola is highly empathetic, non-judgemental and caring; she made me feel as though my breakthroughs were as important to her as they were to me. What I loved most about our time together was that she wasn't afraid to simply hold space for me, to listen and let me figure things out, rather than trying to advise me or solve my problems. I have made huge leaps forward during these five months, not least in the way I view myself and how much I value myself, which has had a hugely positive effect in so many areas of my life.
I cannot thank Nicola enough for her support during this time. I have already recommended her counselling to one friend and I absolutely wouldn't hesitate to recommend her to others. "Anon", April 2016
I can't overstate how important Nicola has been to me over the last few months.
When we first met I was in a very dark place and she has helped me to re-discover my real self, re-gain my self esteem and given me the confidence to move forward.
Thank you so much Nicola! You are amazing! "HF", October 2016
